Silicon carbide is a man-made abrasive comprised of silica (Si) and carbon (C) with a hardness value second only to naturally occurring diamond. The extreme hardness of silicon carbide makes it an excellent material for abrasive wear applications. Silicon carbide shapes, formed from sub-micron powder, are sintered at temperatures in excess of 2000°C resulting in a fine-grain silicon carbide component that is extremely pure with nearly zero porosity. As a result, silicon carbide also has very high strength properties and can operate in oxidizing and corrosive atmospheres. In addition, silicon carbide has a high thermal conductivity and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, making it dimensionally stable across all temperature ranges.
